The Vietnam War: Into the Quagmire
University of Minnesota's Compleat Scholar Program
(three Thursday nights from 7-9, April 9-23/09)

Explore the defining period of the Vietnam War. Synthesize your own conclusions about the events that led to the war, soldiers' experiences in Vietnam, and the impact of the war on United States policy, through firsthand accounts and contemporary historical perspectives.
Program Overview

Explore the defining period of the Vietnam War, a time that dramatically changed the United States. Synthesize your own conclusions about the events that led to the war, soldiers' experiences in Vietnam, and the impact of the war on United States policy, through firsthand accounts and contemporary historical perspectives. Through lecture and discussion you will examine such topics as the Truman Doctrine and the Geneva Accords, the decisions that led to United States involvement, depictions of the war in popular culture and literature, and the changing face of the U.S. military and government following the Vietnam War. To enhance the discussion you will read work by writers such as Noam Chomsky, William Blum, and Howard Zinn. You will leave this course with a deeper understanding of what led to the United States' involvement in Vietnam, what it was like for the soldiers engaged in battle, and how this conflict inexorably changed the country and its approaches to armed conflict. This course provides an ideal introduction to the Compleat Scholar course Fighting Back: Protest Movements of the 1960s (offered by Neal Anderson).

Hello to all:

I want to let you know about the next time I'm offering my course on the historical decisions that led to the Vietnam War. It will again be offered through the University of Minnesota's Compleat Scholar Program (three Thursday nights from 7-9, April 9-23/09).
